How to start a pet sitting business in Florida
Pet sitting and dog walking need no degree or state exam, but a few registrations come up in every state. Here is what Florida's own agencies say, checked October 7, 2026. Rules change, so follow each link before you file.
1. Register the business
An LLC is filed with the Florida Division of Corporations (Sunbiz). A sole proprietor not using their legal name must register a fictitious name with the Division of Corporations, the state level.

2. Sales tax on pet sitting
Not taxable
Florida's rule says charges for boarding or grooming animals are not subject to tax (Rule 12A-1.0215). It doesn't address visits in the client's home, so check with the Department of Revenue if that's most of your work. Food and supplies you buy to use while boarding are taxable to you.

3. Licenses for boarding and pet care
We found no statewide license for pet sitting or boarding. County occupational licenses (local business tax) are typically obtained from the county, and cities may require their own.

4. Also worth checking
- Your city or county: a local business license, and home-business (zoning) rules if dogs stay overnight in your home.
- Insurance: ask an agent about liability coverage and bonding for pet sitters.
- Paperwork: a written service agreement, a veterinary release and a key agreement for every client.
